Will I need an internal pelvic floor examination?
An internal pelvic floor examination is considered the gold standard assessment for pelvic floor muscle function and is recommended in many cases. However, it is never performed without your informed consent. If you are not comfortable with an internal examination, or it is not appropriate, there are other assessment options available, and your treatment can still begin.
What conditions do you treat? We provide assessment and treatment for a range of pelvic health concerns, including:
- Urinary leakage and bladder urgency
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle and low back pain
- Postnatal recovery
- Pelvic floor weakness or overactivity
- Bowel dysfunction, including constipation and faecal incontinence
- Pelvic pain
- Diastasis recti (abdominal separation)
- Return to exercise following pregnancy
- Pessary fittings and management
When should I see a pelvic health physiotherapist during pregnancy? You can attend at any stage of pregnancy. Many women seek support for pregnancy-related aches and pains, bladder symptoms, pelvic floor exercises, birth preparation and education. A pelvic health assessment can help you prepare for labour, birth and your postnatal recovery.
When should I book after having my baby?A postnatal assessment is recommended from around six weeks after birth (or earlier if you have concerns). Whether you had a vaginal birth or caesarean section, a pelvic health physiotherapy assessment can help support your recovery and safely guide your return to exercise and everyday activities.
Do you see women of all ages?Yes. We care for women throughout every stage of life—from pregnancy and the postnatal period to peri-menopause and menopause. Pelvic health concerns can occur at any age, and treatment is always tailored to your individual goals, symptoms and lifestyle.
Do you offer telehealth appointments?Yes. Telehealth appointments are available for selected conditions where an in-person assessment is not essential. If you think telehealth may be suitable for you, please contact Blackwood Physio & Pelvic Health directly to discuss your needs and arrange an appointment.
Can I bring my baby?Absolutely! Babies are always welcome at your appointment. We understand that caring for a newborn can be unpredictable, and we'll work around feeds, nappy changes and cuddles as needed.
What should I wear?Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily. Depending on your assessment, you may be asked to remove some clothing for examination. You will always be provided with privacy and a gown or towel if required.
How long are appointments?Appointment lengths vary depending on the type of consultation. Initial appointments allow sufficient time for a comprehensive assessment, while review appointments focus on your progress and ongoing treatment. Appointment durations are listed when booking online.
Do you offer pessary fittings?Yes. We provide pessary fittings, reviews, replacements and ongoing pessary management for women with pelvic organ prolapse and selected cases of stress urinary incontinence.
Can I claim through my private health insurance? If you have physiotherapy included in your extras cover, you may be able to claim part of the consultation fee. We recommend checking your level of cover with your private health insurer prior to your appointment.
Where are you located?Blackwood Physio & Pelvic Health consults from clinics in Margaret River and Augusta. Please visit our Book Online or Contact page for current clinic locations, availability and appointment times.
What is your cancellation policy? We kindly ask that you provide at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice, or missed without notice, may incur a cancellation fee of up to 100% of the consultation fee.
I feel nervous about my appointment.
That's completely understandable. Pelvic health concerns can feel personal, and many people feel anxious before their first appointment. Our goal is to provide a welcoming, respectful and supportive environment where you feel comfortable asking questions and involved in every step of your care. Your comfort, dignity and consent are always our priority.
